Our mission is to provide metabolic oncology nutrition and food security to support the health and wellness of low-income seniors and other individuals with cancer or chronic illness.
Organic Soup Kitchen is a vital asset to the Santa Barbara community. For 14 years, we’ve been supporting food certainty, healing and health by making and delivering nutrient dense SoupMeals. We care deeply about the nutrition and food security of those in our community, especially our low-income friends, family and neighbors struggling to fight the effects of cancer and chronic illness.
Our Approach
It is our belief that an organic, plant-based diet is an integral part of a cancer patients’ journey to recovery. Consuming functional foods feeds your immune system and supports the defense mechanisms that protect your body from infections and disease. Our SoupMeals are designed to give clients a full spectrum of nutrients in order to help avoid malnutrition, and aid the restoration of your immune system, from the first spoonful.
Our Story
Since 2009, Organic Soup Kitchen has been a vital asset to the Santa Barbara community. For 14 years, it has been and will remain our mission to eliminate food insecurity for our vulnerable, low-income neighbors and seniors struggling to fight the effects of cancer and chronic illnesses.
Shortly into our humble endeavor, Santa Barbara’s medical community became aware of our organic, nutrient-dense soups. Our partnership with the medical community expanded, as did our client outreach. Thus, the Cancer Recovery Program, a division of Organic Soup Kitchen, launched in 2013. We established a Soup Meal production and delivery system with trained volunteer drivers to personally deliver our meals to the homes of our clients and ensure compassionate community connections.
On the heels of our ten-year anniversary in 2019, we renovated an abandoned kitchen into an eco-conscious production facility in order to meet an increased demand for our services. Our industrial equipment and stabilization process has allowed us to blanch and roast fresh produce before vacuum-sealing it in its natural juices without preservatives, which maintains the natural texture, flavor, and nutritional value of the produce. As a bonus, we salvage seasonal, organic produce from local farmers in order to reduce our carbon footprint. In 2023 we expanded to an additional Distribution and Education Center just one block away from our flagship kitchen.
We curate a variety of flavorful soups without compromising our original mission: to deliver organic, richly nutritious food with the intent to nourish bodies and spirits. We craft our soups with purpose to give our clients a full spectrum of nutrients in order to help avoid malnutrition from the first spoonful. Within each plant-based Soup Meal is a minimum of 90% organic ingredients, organic fats such as coconut cream and coconut oil, and organic olive oil. All the herbs and spices we use are non-radiated in order to maintain their medicinal value. Though our flavors vary, there is always a minimum of 15 ingredients that cover the vitamins and minerals necessary to boost one’s immune system. Our soups have always been, and will remain, unique and thoughtfully produced.
Without a doubt, cancer is an epidemic and a strong immune system is vital to the recovery process. No one should have to compromise their nutrition, and at Organic Soup Kitchen, we pride ourselves on our impact within the most fragile demographic in our community. Since 2009, we have served over 1 million soup meals to clients in Santa Barbara, Goleta, Summerland, Carpinteria, and the Santa Ynez Valley. We can’t wait to serve 1 million more
