Leave a Gift That Nourishes Santa Barbara — Today and for Generations to Come
Illness doesn't wait for food security to catch up. Every day in Santa Barbara County, people navigating cancer treatment, chronic disease, and disability face a reality most of us don't think about: their bodies need more than they can access on their own.
Organic Soup Kitchen was built for exactly that gap. Since 2009, we've delivered nutrient-dense, healing soups to neighbors whose conditions demand real nourishment — clinically meaningful to recovery, not just comfort.
The need hasn't shrunk. It won't. Disease doesn't trend downward, and the distance between what people need to heal and what they can afford isn't closing. What changes is how many people we can reach — and that depends on whether we have the foundation to grow.
A planned gift through Perennial Harvest is a decision that the work continues — for every Santa Barbara neighbor, decades from now, who will face what our clients face today. You likely won't know them. But your gift will find them.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account that allows you to support your favorite nonprofits with ease and flexibility. Think of it as a philanthropic savings account: you contribute to the fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to qualified charities like Organic Soup Kitchen over time.
A DAF can also help you create a lasting legacy. By naming Organic Soup Kitchen as the beneficiary of your fund, you ensure your generosity and giving priorities continue to make an impact for years to come. Simply request a beneficiary designation form from your sponsoring organization.

It’s simple to set up:
- If you already have a policy, request a “Change of Beneficiary” form from your insurance company.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) lets individuals age 70½ or older donate directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualified charity like Organic Soup Kitchen—without increasing their taxable income.
Why consider a QCD as an immediate gift?
Giving through a QCD allows you to support our mission while potentially lowering your taxable income. Instead of withdrawing IRA funds as taxable income, you can transfer up to $111,000 per year directly to Organic Soup Kitchen, making your gift work smarter for you and those we serve.
Using QCDs as a legacy gift
You can also name Organic Soup Kitchen as a beneficiary of your IRA, ensuring your generosity continues beyond your lifetime. This simple step helps create a lasting legacy of compassion and care.
Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) provide a flexible way to provide lifetime income. Working with your attorney, you create a trust instrument designating one or more beneficiaries to receive annual income for life or for a term of years. When the trust terminates, the remainder is given to the designated charities.
There are two types of charitable remainder trusts:
- Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust – the income is a fixed dollar amount and the donor cannot make additional contributions to the trust
- Charitable Remainder Unitrust – the income is a fixed percentage of the value of the trust and the donor can make additional contributions to the trust.
The potential benefits of a charitable gift annuity include:
- Income tax deduction for the present value of the remainder interest
- Avoidance of capital gains.
- Flexibility as to the income recipients and type of income.
- A Charitable Remainder Trust can support one or more charities.
